Weezer: Buddy Holly’s Still Really Cool

Rock ‘n roll is an immature, selfish little media. Perhaps it’s because of this that it makes so many regrettable mistakes (see overdosers from Elvis to Ike Turner). One of the saddest mistakes it has made is its “awe shucks, aint that cute” attitude of nerd rock. Thirty years after Led Zeppelin, Devo, and Zappa, only LZ enjoys worldwide success. Yet ask any real fan and they’ll say that Zappa is infinitely more interesting music. Think I’m lying? Check out Weezer’s, “Buddy Holly” video (aside: directed by a pre-Jackass Spike Jonze).

20 years later, Slash has his own video game. With all props to G n’ R - arguably the best rock n’ roll band in history, if not the most short lived, why do they get all the glory? Check out some of Weezer’s catalogue on YouTube. As cool as Appetite for Destruction was, I get a much bigger kick out of Weezer (be sure to check out Beverly Hills - recorded at Hugh Hef’s estate, and staring none other than the grand master pimpster himself!).

Long live nerd rock. You ought to take yourself seriously, cuz you rule dude.
